The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.
In fact, the entire game is a meta-cognition loop. We’re trapped on a time loop, watching Colt, or maybe even Colt, as he slowly murders his way through the island to find the Visionaries’ leader who has locked the island into one day so they can all piss about for eternity. It’s very much like the time loop in Deathloop, only the characters are aware of the game’s time loop.
We’ve seen plenty of examples of time loops come to life in games, so we’re all aware of the problem. However, we’re not usually aware of it’s presence in our own lives. If we’re not aware of it, we can’t begin to predict or plan for it.
As we all know, the term “time loop” doesn’t apply to games. We dont feel this way because the characters spend time on the loop. They are not conscious of it. But they do, and we cant know that without a little more thinking.
That said, the game’s main character, Durham is aware of the fact that the loop exists. He is, after all, the resident Time Lord of Blackreef. He was the one who locked the island into a repeating day and is now trying to undo the actions of a group of Visionaries.
What’s the reason his game was so successful? If you watch the trailers, you would think he was the one who locked the island into one repeating day. But he is not. What happened to his time loop is a good one.
So what happens next? What happens if a party-lovers try to kill the Dreamers? The Dreamers just kill the Dreamers, while the Dreamers are gone. And if you don’t see them, you don’t want to see them again. Whats a good point to make? Well, it’s a short game, but if you find that the Dreamers are at the center of the game, the Dreamers end up killing the Dreamers.
The Dreamers are the party-lovers who’ve locked the island into a repeating day. And when they’re gone, the party-lovers kill them. They’re the ones who are now the Dreamers, and they will kill the Dreamers.
Deathloop starts out with the party-lovers in one island after another. The main goal of the game is to take out the party-lovers, which is essentially like a puzzle, but with a lot more power. You have to move your party-lovers from one island to the other, doing what you have to in order to escape with your life.
